The use of disorientation may be useful when putting tangible concepts together, but it is not effective when using symbols. In the case of numerals and letters, they are actually symbols. "c-a-t" is not really a cat; it is our language symbol to represent a cat. As well the numeral 5 represents five pieces of something.
If a dyslexic person sees a cat curled up sleeping, they can see the fur, and from the previous mental image they have of a cat imagine what it's head, tail and paws look like and hence determine that is a sleeping cat. By manipulating the images ‘on file’ in their mind, then they know that it is actually a cat.
Whereas when they see a word that they don't understand e.g. ‘cat’, and their mind once again goes into a default mode – rearranging what information is in front of them with previous images. In so doing their mind, in an attempt to solve the problem, would rearrange the word in milliseconds to the images seen in the picture above. Yet, no matter how many times they manipulate the word; they will not figure out the word - they will only experience frustration. That’s where the Davis Tools are required to stop this cycle.
Davis Orientation Counselling™
The tools of orientation, release, and energy dial are taught so that the client is able to self regulate their own disorientation. It will now be in their control when they choose to turn their disorientation on or off as the task requires. It is not that the client needs to be 'cured' of dyslexia, but rather they need to learn the tools that will enable them to control their disorientation much like an on/off switch.
If one considers a simple sentence such as, "The boy got the bags and other things out of the car"; there is a visual picture that a dyslexic could attain perhaps for: "boy, bags, things, car" however the other 8 words would not produce a picture. Yet with only 33% of the information being received, we would expect the dyslexic to comprehend the sentence.
In order for anyone to really master a word we must know the three parts of the word (just as all dictionaries are setup). Namely, what the word looks like (how we spell it), what the word sounds like (how we pronounce it) and what it means (its definition).
Through the use of Davis Symbol Mastery™, the client is shown how to create and experience the three parts of these words that do not otherwise naturally create an instant picture in their mind. The client will do clay models over the months following the program to complete the 200+ words that are the most common trigger words in the English language. This artistic task is welcomed by those who enjoy working with their hands. Once the missing pieces are supplied then reading becomes much easier for them.
